Chapter 9: The Bouncer's Warning

I stood back, watching as the bouncer scanned the street for any signs of trouble. His eyes darted back and forth, his expression a mask of boredom. I knew better than to try and sneak in unnoticed. The bouncer, Victor, was notorious for being one of the toughest guys in the city.

Just then, my friend Kaida appeared beside me, her bright pink hair standing out against the drab urban landscape. "Hey, what's the holdup?" she asked, eyeing Victor warily.

"Waiting for someone," I replied, nodding towards the bouncer. "I think he's waiting for you."

Kaida frowned, her eyes narrowing as she took in Victor's imposing figure. "What does he want?"

"I don't know," I admitted, "but I think it's going to be trouble."

Victor finally turned towards us, his gaze lingering on each of us before settling on Kaida. He nodded curtly and stepped forward, his massive frame filling the narrow alleyway.

"You're coming in," he growled, his voice like thunder. "The owner wants to see you both."

I exchanged a wary glance with Kaida, but we knew better than to argue with Victor. We followed him into the club, which was even more cramped and claustrophobic inside than it had been outside.

As we entered, the music reached a fever pitch, the strobing lights casting an eerie glow over the crowd of patrons. The air was thick with smoke and sweat, and I could feel the tension building in my chest.

We made our way through the throng of people, the DJ's pounding beat making it hard to think. Kaida grabbed my arm, her grip tight as we navigated the crowded dance floor.

"What do you think is going on?" she whispered urgently.

"I don't know," I replied, "but I have a feeling it's connected to the job."

We finally reached the bar, where our boss, Mael, was waiting for us. He was a tall, lean man with slicked-back hair and an air of confidence that bordered on arrogance.

"Ah, perfect timing," he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "I've just received some... information that I think you two need to hear."

He gestured towards Victor, who had been quietly observing us from the sidelines. The bouncer nodded once, and then turned back into the crowd, disappearing into the sea of bodies.

Mael's eyes locked onto Kaida's face, a calculating look spreading across his features. "Kaida, you're in danger. Your sister has gone missing."

Kaida's expression changed in an instant, her face pale as she stumbled backwards. I caught her arm, holding her upright as the news sank in.

"Where is she?" I demanded, my voice rising in alarm.

"I don't know," Mael replied, his eyes never leaving Kaida's face. "But I think it's connected to the job. You two were hired to extract a package from the edgerunners' hideout... but something went wrong."

Suddenly, Kaida's eyes snapped towards me, her gaze burning with determination.

"I'm going after her," she said, her voice firm and resolute.

I felt a jolt of surprise, followed by a growing sense of unease. We had been hired to extract the package, not rescue some lost sister. But now it seemed that Kaida's feelings for her sister were stronger than any job or contract could ever be.

"I'm coming with you," I said, my voice firm as I stood up straight.

Mael's eyes flicked between us, a calculating look spreading across his face.

"Fine," he said finally. "But this changes everything. We need to get out of here, now."

As we turned to leave, the music reached a crescendo, the lights flashing in time with the beat. But I knew that our troubles were far from over. The edgerunners were notorious for being merciless to those who dared to cross them...

And now Kaida had just declared war on her sister's captors.

I took a deep breath as we pushed through the crowd, ready to face whatever lay ahead.

But little did I know that Victor was watching us from across the room, his eyes glinting with a sinister light in the strobing lights.

The bouncer had been more than just a security detail. He had been waiting for Kaida... and he had information about her sister's whereabouts.

My instincts told me to run. But it was too late. Victor began to move towards us, his massive frame filling the room...

And everything went black.
